Declaration of permanent settlement abroad

This procedure means the announcement and registration of the intention to permanently settle abroad.

The required documents are the followings:

  • valid Hungarian passport, identity card
  • Hungarian address card (lakcímkártya)
  • simple copy of the Hungarian birth certificate
  • if the applicant is married, a Hungarian marriage certificate
  • if the applicant is divorced, a Hungarian marriage certificate containing the fact of the divorce; if the applicant is a widower, a Hungarian marriage certificate containing the fact of the widower's marital status

Please note that your old address card will be withdrawn.

In case of a minor applicant, the declaration of permanent settlement abroad requires the presence of both parents, or the presence of one parent and the written consent of the other parent, which consent needs to be certified by a notary or two witnesses.

Application for registration as a Hungarian citizen living abroad

If a Hungarian citizen is not included in the Hungarian personal data and address register (either due to having a passive status or because s/he has never had a permanent residence in Hungary), s/he can apply for being registered. Registration requires the completion of the “application for registration as a Hungarian citizen living abroad” (“kérelem külföldön élő magyar állampolgárként történő nyilvántartásba vételhez”) form, which must be signed in the presence the consul.

The required documents are the followings:

  • valid Hungarian passport, identity card
  • simple copy of the Hungarian birth certificate
  • if the applicant is married, a Hungarian marriage certificate
  • if the applicant is divorced, a Hungarian marriage certificate containing the fact of the divorce; if the applicant is a widower, a Hungarian marriage certificate containing the fact of the widower's marital status

Once the registration is completed, an address card is issued, where the address is indicated as “foreign address” (“külföldi cím”) (without specifying the exact address abroad). The card shall arrive to the Consulate within 2-3 months.

Notification of change of foreign residence

Hungarian citizens living abroad can also request recording the change of their foreign residence. In this case, there is no need to change the address card, as it still indicate the mere information of “foreign address” (“külföldi cím”).

The procedure is free of charge.
