Applications can be submitted only in person by prior appointment. Appointments can be made via the online reservation system.
The use of the online reservation system and making appointment is free of charge.
Changing birth name means that the applicant wishes to change his/her last name and/or first name. Each Hungarian citizen is entitled to change his or her name. The change can be from one Hungarian name to another; or from a Hungarian name to a foreign-like name.
The required documents are the followings:
- original Hungarian birth certificate
- valid passport or identity card

Please note that if it is not the first time of changing your name, the procedure fee will be higher.
The duration of the procedure is at least 3 months, but it might take longer.
Choosing a foreign-sounded name is possible only under special circumstances. Therefore, it is highly recommended to previously check what kind of name options you have. The pre-condition for submitting an application to change for a foreign-sounded name is that the applicant had already registered his/her permanent settlement abroad, or submit such application simultaneously with the application for the name change.
